Current & Upcoming Classes

Open Company Class with Spacetime Dance
WE'RE ON BREAK!  Please check back again soon.

Intermediate through advanced movers are welcome to join us in a somatic-based modern dance class where we will explore techniques of moving in and out of the floor with ease, specificity in Space, and greater articulation through Effort. Using the Bartenieff Fundamentals as a framework, we progress through a series of guided explorations to discover multiple pathways of transferring weight and learn set combinations that get us moving efficiently from our feet to our hands and back again. By fine-tuning our sensitive and articulate bodies, we access a greater power to move with strength and agility from all angles.

Available Workshops

Multi-dimensional Movement:
Learn how we translate lower and higher dimensions onto the body using Laban principles.  Classical American modern techniques have codified methods of translating one and two dimensional movement onto the body to translate ideas concurrent to western visual art movements of the early 20th century.  Somatic techniques have filtered into the training of dancing bodies for decades to re-introduce three dimensional, full-bodied movement back into concert dance.  Now learn how four dimensions might be translated onto the body within both an improvisational context and a codified context and how it might be used to understand current art and media trends through movement.

Somatic-based Modern Dance:
In this Somatic-based Modern class we will explore techniques of moving in and out of the floor with ease, inversions, and multiple pathways of transferring weight.  Using the Bartenieff Fundamentals as a framework, we will progress through a series of experiences that will get us moving efficiently from our feet to our hands.  By fine-tuning our sensitive and articulate bodies, we access a greater power to move with strength and agility from all angles.  Teen-Adult classes available.

Laban Movement Analysis:
Learn the basics of B.E.S.S., Structure of Observation, the 3 Why's and how they can help you see and classify movement in an objective way wether you are a dancer, actor, teacher or are just interested in how people move their body.  In B.E.S.S. we'll break down how to see the Body and it's 6 Patterns of Total Body Connectivity in anatomical terms, experience the Effort through flow, weight, space and time, learn Laban's classification of the Space in 1, 2, and 3 dimensional movement, and we'll look at Shape and what it means to have intention behind movement.  With the Structure of Observation and the 3 Why's, we'll practice a simple and effective way of recording our observations, keeping them organized and identifying the of Why within our observation.  Laban Movement Analysis can be a simple method of identifying patterns of movement for psycho-physical health, developing our movement technique, and for developing tools to expand our artistic and creative lives.

Introduction to Bartenieff Fundamentals:
What are the Bartenieff Fundamentals?  How can they improve your movement through life, dancing technique and perspective on traditional modern dance class?  We will explore Irmgaard Bartenieff's Fundamentals, basic body mechanics, and experience a traditional Bartenieff class format.

Introduction to Movement Fundamentals:
Using the 6 Patterns of Total Body Connectivity based on the work of Irmgaard Bartenieff, we will walk through how to make the body move easily and smoothly from the floor to standing.  After exploring an individualized alignment assessment, we will address core-body connectivities all the way down to improving your fine-motor dexterity through modern dance movement basics.

Site Specific Improvisation Workshop:
What is Site Specific dance?  How do I begin to Improvise?  We will address these questions and more as we use any non-traditional dance space to explore how we look at our environment, what options we have dancing with it and how to set up a Site Specific movement exploration.  Using the basics of Laban's definition of Space and Efforts, we will experience how our use of level, timing, and shaping can create a dynamic dance duet with our environment!

Improvising in Contact with Others Workshop:
What is Improvisation?  What is Contact?  How do I use these things to create a new dance?  How do I keep myself safe when dancing with someone new?  We will explore these questions and more in this beginning-level workshop using Improvisation and Contact to create duets.  We will learn how to initiate contact, how to disengage, levels of contact, and spatial awareness as well as use our new tools to share our new duets at the end of the workshop.

Choreography Workshop:
How do I start choreographing?  How do I know it's good?  I have an idea, but where do I go from here?  We will address these questions and more in this Laban-based Choreography Workshop.  You do not have to have experience to attend, but be ready to get creative!  We will discuss and experience tools you can use to generate new material, expound on what you already have, or get a start on your idea.  We will also discuss how to use tools to give and receive objective feedback on your work.
